Tacitus is one of the most famous Roman historians. Tacitus is best known for The Annals and Histories, covering the history of Ancient Rome in very minute detail, but he also wrote Germania, a fascinating description of the Germanic people as seen from the Roman point of view circa 100 A.D.

Tacitus is easy to find in English. Other authors are easy to find in Latin, but most of us left the Latin scene in high school and only if you happen to be in my generation - post seventy. He is easy to read, was known as a republican, and write from that prospectus. He is enjoyable and informative. If interested in Roman history it is the way to go.Product details

The Annals Tacitus 9781519628855 Books Reviews
outstanding,if u enjoy history,u will enjoy this. he was there.but he (like most persons of that time) was a bigoted bastard.i think its a hard read, but u will enjoy it! heh,for no reason,u can say'yes,i was reading 'tactus' this weekend,''etc, etc. impressive as hell.
Great window into the "Good Old Days" under murderous emperors.
Tacitus and Josephus are must reads. If you buy this in form it is a searchable book. I plugged in the name "Jesus" to see if there was any reference to the christ. Many Roman Officers named Jesus but see no reference to a christ in this book. Shouldn't expect to see as "Christ" is derived from the Greek "kristo". Still a named used by the Greek Orthodox Church to describe their holy man if my recollection serves my well.
Excellent history
As an historian Tacitus provides us with an unprecedented front row seat to ancient events. His narrative, though understandably biased, is lively and colorful, full of insight and wit.
The Annals offers interesting facts not often known via other books pertaining to Roman history.
The translation from Latin is absolutely pathetic. Hardly any attempt is made to preserve the actual meanings, not just the literal translation of the words. Some sentences do not even have grammatical or syntactical validity. A very hard read and a total loss of the intrinsic beauty of the Latin phrasing.
Shameful!
